You can do the brave step and do beta testing of 0.10:
add your USB hard disk as a collection (with current svn) and start to move
your pictures to the disk. The expected behavior is that the collection will
be shown as soon as you plug in your harddisk, and when moving / copying all
metadata will be preserved.
You may want to do this with test images first and report any bugs you
encounter.
