[Digikam-users] More IPTC questions

Further to my previous post about IPTC data I *think* I understand how
I lost all my data but I'm note sure how to avoid doing the same again.
It appears that if I move images within digikam then they acquire the
settings in Configure Digikam even if they have their own settings
already. Similarly if I move pictures into digikam which already have
Identity values they will be overwritten by the Digikam defaults.
I have my pictures backed up and if I change the digikam root album
directory to the old (back up) data I see all my correct camera and
film settings in Identity/Source. However whatever method I use to
copy those images into my new digikam albums they lose their Source
setting and get the default value from my new digikam installation.
Is there no satisfactory place to store this sort of setting that can
be written to a large[ish] number of images all in one go but isn't
overwritten quite so easily by digikam's defaults?
