On an otherwise idle system, I get this for the drive on which
/home/user/pictures is running:
ubuntu at ubuntu-desktop:~$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sdb1

 Timing cached reads:   340 MB in  2.01 seconds = 169.46 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  190 MB in  3.03 seconds =  62.79 MB/sec
