/home/user/.thumbnails is on a local IDE drive. But
/home/user/pictures/digikam is on a different partition on the same
drive. Might that be a problem? Note that / is on yet another
partition.

I always put / and /home on separate partitions. On this box, with
it's 500GB hard drive, I have an additional few partitions, namely
~/pictures, ~/music, ~/video. I did this so that I could easily backup
what I need.
