Strangely enough it seems that I have been able to save utf-8 strings in
ITPC via digikam (my locale is UTF8 based) and import it successfully to
my own Gallery server with the IPTC data intact (and properly inserted
into the appropriate field).

Ok, I would like to hear this, since I often use different languages for
tags this is quite important to me.

Very cool! I thought it was only for syncing. I will take a look at this.

Thanks for the answers. Looks like there is a lot to look forward to in
