[Digikam-users] Digikam crashes on download photos

Won't help you much but  -

Mandriva2006 / Digikam 0.80
libgphoto2-2.1.6 / Canon Powershot A610

Camera detected as USB PTP Class Camera

and it all works just fine. The only difference is that I am using 
Mandriva2006 instead of Mandrake 10.1.

So you could perhaps just upgrade
