When I start digiKam, it shows the last view (in my case a particular folder X
in Album View), however, no thumbnails are displayed in the thumbnail area. To
resolve the problem, I have to click on some other folder and then back on the
folder X.

As far as I recall, the problem of non-displayed thumbnails after startup
exists for a longer time, may be it has never worked properly.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start digiKam, choose Album View, click on a folder of your choice.
Thumbnails are displayed as expected.
2. Quit digiKam.
3. Start digiKam. It shows the same view like in step 1, however no thumbnails
are displayed.

Actual Results:  
Thumbnails are missing.

Expected Results:  
Thumbnails should be displayed.
