I just tested with digiKam 4.10.0 for Windows.

It seems it just cannot deal with any unicode characters in folder or file
names.

For example, I just made a duplicate copy of a .jpg file that digiKam has read
without any problem, and rename it to Հայաստան.jpg. digiKam showed me "Failed
to load image".
