As a workaround, deleting the following lines in ~/.kde4/share/config/digikamrc
(when Digikam doesnt' run) solves the problem (but it reappears after some
times) :
ThumbbarState=AAAA/wAAAAD9AAAA....

It's really strange that the Thumbbar cannot be reduced....
