More bad news: This time, after deleting the recognition.db, I did not use
automatic face detection at all. I only tagged faces manually in a number of
pictures. First it seemed that everything was fine, but right now - with
recognition.db having reached a (moderate) size of 67M, digikam started
crashing again.

So it seems that deleting the recognition.db is only a temporary remedy, and
that the problem is not (only) caused by invoking the automatic face
recognition...
