At least for me, and for the time being, this helped!

Since deleting the file, I was able to manually tag faces on a few dozens of
pictures *without* digikam crashing (or increasing its memory footprint).

I did not dare, though, to run more sophisticated operations like starting the
automatic search for (new) faces...
