I also have the blank thumbnail problem in Preview mode ( Fedora / Gnome /
Digikam 4.6.0 ). Deleting ThumbbarState in the rc file fixes it for me.

I can confirm that the thumb bar cannot be reduced. This problem also exists in
the Light Table, as well as Preview mode. In Light Table, the thumb bar is not
as big as in Preview mode, but it is still too big, making the Light Table not
very useful.
