The problem went away. I am using Digikam 4.2 under KDE 4.13.3. It's working
now. 

It might have been a network problem I didn't realize. I am in China and Google
works only with VPN. The VPN is not 100% reliable, sometimes showing a
connection in Network-Manager, which is broken and disconnected.
