I also tried to reproduce the error on ubuntu with a fresh installation of
digikam 4.2.0. After the installation the settings menu works. Then I create a
mysql-database, and change the database settings to mysql. Then I open the
settings menu, and get the freeze. 
Since I have mysql, no mariadb, the freeze seems not to be related to mariadb.
