Ok, so after removing an attached USB stick I can start digiKam. The issue
still exists in 2.7 - once virtual memory allocation reaches 1,8GB, the GUI
will start behaving eratically. 

Oddly enough, no alloc error messages are shown in debugview anymore, but it is
still unusable.
