I've managed to get this with Digikam 2.5.0 without using external programs.

I've set digikam to write xmp sidecar files for my raw files. For some reason
(I'm still investigating why), if I add a rating to a photo,  this xmp file
contains ONLY the first line "<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>" and
nothing else. When this happens, digikam starts showing portrait photos in
landscape orientation. If I change rating to 0, the xmp file contains all
metadata and digikam again shows the photo in correct orientation.
