I NEVER see this problem on my computerS.

What do you change on your settings ? What are you set about collections
(removable, network, etc...)

What's about DB configuration ? It's a network mysql server ?

We need more info to investiguate. You can shared you digikam settings with
your ~/.kde4/share/config/digikamrc.
