Full explanation with mockups

Version: 2.2.0 (using KDE 4.7.2)
OS: Linux

The digiKam has great function to have a editor as stand alone application what
can be launched alone and as a own
window when launched from digiKam itself. The current trend is to get ridd of
the menubar itself. Usually this means all
the functions are tried to push to toolbar. What can not hold much functions,
so some adds a tabs to toolbar, what is first
shown in 90's in Macromedia products and Delphi IDE and now most famous is the
Microsoft Office 2007.
But there have been great way before those as well. The sidepanels. They were
not so good when we had 4:3 monitors
with limited resolution. And not even the later 5:4 format screens. But now
when most are widescreens, the 16:9 or 16:10
format, the sidepanel is the best option for many reasons.

(These were done before the current tool organisation behind one button with
drop-down view but this still apply)

Reproducible: Didn't try

Expected Results:
Better usability
