Do you tried to start digiKam as new instance a clean database to see if
problem disappear ?

IDEA: force a new backtrace. 

digiKam started up to create a new thumbnail database while reading _all_ pics
in a fresh/new database.
After two hours _no_ progress, digiKam remains with _zero_ percent progress.
Hitting some keys, digiKam 
crashes
