There is an exception thrown in the event loop and the rethrown, so we do not
get to see the real problem.

Please run digikam under gdb, catching exceptions:
gdb digikam
catch throw
run

provoke the crash, then type
bt
and post the backtrace here. (preferably with a recent version, >= 1.7)
