Thanks for your help.

Under ubuntu 10.10, copying and uncompressing the haarcascades solved the
issue:

sudo cp -R /usr/share/doc/opencv-doc/examples/haarcascades/haarcascades
/usr/share/opencv/
cd /usr/share/opencv/haarcascades
sudo gunzip *.gz
