I had the same issues on openSUSE 12.1 x86_64: if openstreetmap or atlas map
were used inside the map pane of digikam, dk crashed almost immediately. When I
switched the map pane to google maps, it did not crash.
After upgrading to NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.09 (current beta), both
openstreetmap and atlas map work stable.

This bug might also be related to:
288775 - crashed when pressing buttin in the right-table control thing for map
view 
271690 - digikam crash when selecting an area on map 
289206 - digikam crash open map 
185290 - crash when quickly changing GPS tagged images using geolocation
