In the buggy folder, I've got 12 JPEG files. The 'ulimit -n' says 1024.
I can open files under Gnome with Eye Of Gnome.
I'm using DigiKam 2.1.1 under Ubuntu 11.09. I'll try v2.2 if I found a Deb.
