Exactly the same thing happens with Digikam 2.0 beta 4 when built on the
Kubuntu 11.04 (natty) so it looks like the problem might be *ubuntu
specific?!?!

On Kubuntu 11.04 the system components are these (newer version of QT4 from
previous bug reporting in this thread):
