Thanks Gilles.  But if it is a libkdcraw problem it's not because I have two 
versions.  I'm using libkdcraw.so.8.1.0 from KDE 4.5.1.

Digikam isn't crashing for me as I said, it starts ok from desktop, but
displays 
no pictures.   From console I get:

digikam: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libdigikam.so.1: undefined symbol: 
_ZN11KDcrawIface6KDcraw26checkToCancelReceivingDataEv

I assume this is the libkdcraw connection?

It has been doing this since ver. 1.2.
