Reading XMP sidecar files works in libkexiv2! I just did a quick test:

1. Select any photo.
2. From the menu: Image -> Metadata -> Import XMP...
3. Select a .xmp file with some tags

I imported a file with some exif:GPS*, lr:HierarchicalSubject, and dc:subject
tags, and they were all imported into the XMP metadata of the selected photo.
