I used the instructions on the fore mentioned
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports page, in the section
"Installing a Single Package" to download the digikam-1.0.0-1ubuntu1~karmic1
package and install it.  The package is downloadable from mirrors linked at the
very bottom of this page:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic-backports/graphics/digikam
