That's not the point at all.  For example, sometimes when saving an image from
a web browser, under certain circumstances, if the server sends certain
headers, the file could be saved locally without an extension.

Any user could also rename an image and remove the extension, whether on
purpose or by accident.  When a user encounters this bug it's a non-trivial
problem, leaving them to think their file is GONE, but it would be trivial to
account for this in the code and fix this bug.

What good reason could there be to not fix this?
