I am tempted to agree with you that the libraries from the latest released KDE
is too old for DigiKam. 

If you want, I can file one bug on the configure script not telling you that it
found libraries, but they are just too old. 

I can file another bug on DigiKam relying on unreleased libraries. 

In the meantime I will just have to wait for the next KDE release before I can
use the latest DigiKam
