I have tried setting PKG_CONFIG_PATH to /opt/kde4/lib/pkgconfig/ before
compiling. Still no change.

The libraries are from the latest released version of KDE. ( 4.4.4 ) If Digikam
depends upon unreleased software, that's a whole different class of bug. 

However, the configure script complains that it cannot find the packages, not
that they are too old. 

The configure script from the previous released version of DigiKam (1.2.0)
finds the same packages just fine.
