After compiling Digikam 1.0.0 under MaxOSX 10.6 using mac ports, I also can not
see the thumbnails. I guess it is more an installation problem than a bug in
Digikam. 
It seems to be a quite common problem of wrong Digikam installations. I have
seen the same problem under linux in the past as well. Sometimes after updating
Digikam, I had to log out / log in to see the thumbnails again.

It would be nice if there were some graphical feedback/error message stating
that there is a problem with kioslave.
