You're right, Gilles, it's a KDE problem, not digikam.

For anyone interested, look here:
http://www.krusader.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=10746

Apparently, hicolor icons don't work with the newest kdelibs that comes with
the KDE installation 4.3.4 (using MacPorts).

To remedy this, one must install the hicolor theme by running:

sudo port install hicolor-icon-theme

Then, change directory to:

Applications/MacPorts/KDE4/kcmshell4.app/Contents/MacOS/

Now, one must update the icon cache by switching to a different icon theme
(e.g. Oxygen). Make sure you have another theme installed (if necessary, you
can run: sudo port install oxygen-icons), and then enter the following in the
command line:

./kcmshell4 icons

This will bring up the kcmshell application. Here, select the other theme (e.g.
Oxygen), then click 'Apply'. Then click 'OK' to exit.

That does it!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, as always, Gilles!

Cheers,
Rishi
