A great starting point is the part 3 of the XMP Specifications - "Storage in
Files" : http://www.adobe.com/devnet/xmp/pdfs/XMPSpecificationPart3.pdf pages
15 to 25. It provides information about how serialized XMP metadata is packaged
into XMP Packets and embedded in different file formats.

Like Fotonotes, XMP is formatted with XML so embedding it into image files is
exactly the same problem. But no Fotonotes library is in sight.
