Yes I think it may be a timeout issue. After I start digikam and have the main
window up, the hard disk is still being accessed a lot. It's only after the hdd
accesses have slowed down or stopped that I can change directories and then get
the thumbnails shown. So I am guessing that kioslave is busy accessing the hdd
and is thus unresponsive to digikam for too long, but I don't know how that
stuff works in reality. Once the disk cache contains the right data kioslave
manages to respond in time and all is well until the disk cache is evicted and
the process starts again.
