The crash occurs when opening an image with libtiff, deep inside libtiff. We
dont really want to read the image, just get some information. This must be
some libtiff problem.

There are some tools that come with libtiff, like "tiffinfo". You could try
something like 
find /media/fotos/Digikam\ Sample/ -name \*.tif -or -name \*.tiff -print -exec
tiffinfo {} \;
and see if tiffinfo also crashes at some point.
