As far as I can tell, wikimapia's API only allows reverse geocoding, but not
displaying custom markers on the map:

http://blog.wikimapia.org/node/19

Therefore, we could currently only use it as a reverse geocoding backend. You
also need a key to use it, and I could not yet figure out whether this key will
be bound to a certain URL, like the Google Maps V2 API key.

These things need to be known before someone can write a backend for it, be it
reverse geocoding or image display.
