I have tried everything I could think of, downloaded the latest Digikam (1.2
from openSuSE 4.4.2 Core repositories, reloaded all kio related items, removed
digikamrcc, rebuilt the database from scratch).  Still all albums showed zero.

I just now downgraded Digikam down to 9.4 release from the repo-oss
repositories on openSuSE (only other version that shows as available for my
platform).  Digikam now works again, shows all pictures, etc.

In case anyone was interested.
