One thing to rule out is a problem with libpgf. For this test, change in
libs/threadimageio/thumbnailcreator.cpp, line 498,
    dbInfo.type             = DatabaseThumbnail::PGF;
to
    dbInfo.type             = DatabaseThumbnail::PNG;
