Ok, I just sent a message to the libpgf developers' mailing list:

But is libpgf really such an improvement over the previous method? Maybe it
should be disabled by default until the issues are resolved. Powerpcs as
desktops may be a negligible, dying species, but if it really is an endianness
bug ARM processors would also be affected. ARM netbooks running Android or
Ubuntu Linux could soon be a big competition to WinTel machines...

Or maybe configure could figure out what machine type it runs on and
automatically set ENABLE_THUMBS_DB accordingly?
