I will make interface terribly cluttered...

I would suggest different solution (very similar to Adobe Bridge):

White rectangle with small arrow. When arrow clicked show menu with color
labels (yaaay ;) - after choosing label rectangle changes color. But when
hovering over this rectangle show stars.

Five empty stars below each photo will look bad (IMO).
