Summary: Allow tags to be used to geolocate images
           Product: digikam
           Version: 0.10.0
          Platform: Ubuntu Packages
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: wishlist
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: digikam-devel at kde.org
        ReportedBy: dkde at gardnersworld.org

Version: 0.10.0 (using KDE 4.2.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

I have thousands of images with no gelocation co-ordinates, but I have
tagged images with tags like "Places/<Country>/<City>", etc. Now that
digiKam 0.10.0 has geolocation support, I would like to use it for all
my images, but I do not have a GPS logger and don't plan to get one
any time soon.

My alternative proposal that would suit my workflow is to allow tags to
carry co-ordinates and apply them automatically when a tag is applied.

For example, for the images from my weekend in London, I would normally
apply my "Places/England/London" tag. To geolocate these, I then have to
select the images and search for "London" or whatever and pick a point
on the map to set the co-ordinates. The next time I have pictures from
London, I'll have to do the same again: apply the tags and search for and
set the co-ordinates in two separate operations.

If my tag "Places/England/London" could have associated co-ordinates,
then simply applying that tag to an image with no co-ordinates would
allow me to tag and locate the image in one go.

I'm not too concerned about locating accurately to the metre at
present. However, if I later want to refine the location, say to
Trafalgar Square, I could select the images and edit the co-ordinates
and the initial position would already be London, making it much
easier to refine the position, as I would already be in the right
area.

There are problems with this, of course. If I apply tags to images
that already have co-ordinates, should the co-ordinates be reset? I
might have tagged them incorrectly the first time or I might have
set the co-ordinates correctly and am now just refining the tag to,
say, "Places/England/London/Trafalgar Square", and want to apply it
to images I've already tagged "Places/England/London". There is
probably a way to overcome these pitfalls. DigiKam could, for
example, allow the tag to be assigned and the location of that tag
to be applied separately via a right-click menu on the tag instead
of just the tag check-box.

Anyone think this could be a useful feature? I assume that most people
would like to use geolocation but do not have GPS loggers or in-camera
GPS support. For us, this kind of added feature would be a great help.
