I had the same problem with ubuntu 8.10 (intrepid).

I've solved it like this:

1) Updating the file  /etc/security/limits.conf

Setting these 2 values:
*         soft     nofile         20000
*         hard     nofile         20000

Just to be sure these values are good for you, issue this command:
$ cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max 
101270 # number of files allowed to be opened at the same time

2) rebooting the computer because I don't know how to make it to be taken in
account immediately.
