I agree that fading in the rating box like the other buttons is better than the
current solution.

Notwithstanding, with the number of overlays that we have or plan: Selection,
Rotation, Rating, color tags, maybe comment editing in the future - I can
imagine that some users will feel this is overloaded and want to switch off
some of these. This could be done by simple actions in the View menu.
