I think digikam is the wrong application for this. You use digikam to manage
pictures, and the camera interface to download pictures from the storage of the
camera.
Your webcam provides you with a video stream that you can use for instant
messaging, or if you really want you can record it with appropriate
applications or store single frames from the stream. Say you have taken such a
series of images in a JPG format, then you can start using digikam to manage
them (but you usually dont use your webcam to take photos anyway.

In short: digikam does not handle video devices.

You should in theory be able to use your webcam for video chatting with kopete,
why this does not work or if it should work with current versions of kopete I
dont know.
