Patch

This patch seems to work fine for me.

It just copies first to the stack (local var item) and then checks "item" to be
valid.

This only fixes the NULL-pointer access, but not the fact that the method is
called twice. I haven't had a deep look into the code, so I'm unsure if this is
wished behavior or a problem.
