Ok, so this really is a bug.

The ubuntu thing is something else. Ubuntu packages beta5 with their release. A
beta is what a beta is... possibly unstable. And we get so many reports from
ubuntu users with bugs that are already fixed since beta5. We somehow need to
convice the ubuntu team to update their digikam package and it helps if users
request this.
