Thanks for the advice Gilles. 
But don't you think it should be fixed in the Ubuntu repos? I'm ok to update my
exiv2 version, but most users won't know how to do that. 

It's the same problem with version 0.10, it's not only with the unstable
version 1.0. So maybe it's worth a fix.
