Sorry, I know it's not digikam's task but I thought it could be of interest
anyways.
I sent an email to IPTC with the following data about digiKam:

Product version      1.0
Supported OS     Windows: All recent
Mac: OS X
*ix: Linux
Supports IIM     YES
Supports XMP and IPTC Core     XMP supported , IPTC Core supported. 
Supports IPTC Extension     YES
Synchronizes IIM/Core values     Metadata values are synchronized: Metadata
values are synchronized: back and forth
Comments      digiKam is an advanced digital photo management application for
Linux, Windows, and Mac-OSX and free software (GPL)
Software vendor     digikam.org
Visit vendor's web site     http://www.digikam.org
