First simple question: Have you logged out or restarted your system?
I think the kioslave for displaying the albums could not be loaded, this
sometimes happens when kdeinit is not loading the new slave properly.

Second guess: If after a logout/restart the images are still missing, try
renaming you config file (home/XXX/.kde4/share/config/digikamrc) and restart
digiKam. After digiKam has been set up, the images should be visible.
