Here's a proposal that would be fast and discoverable for the following use
case:

What I usually do is add the same tag multiple times to multiple photos. So,
the way to minimize the number of clicks is the following:

- after I add tag "x", the drop-down menu is extended with entries "Add tag X",
"Remove tag X" (or even "Add/Remove tag X", see below for the reason). Same if
I just create a new tag.
- If I add another tag by selecting it from "add tag" item in the dropdown, the
"Add tag X" entry is switched to the new item.
- A simple shortcut (something like 't') is added automatically, and shown in
the menu.

This way, the sequence of actions for adding 10 instances of tag "x" would be:
3 clicks to select tag for the first time (or to create one), and then 10
keypresses to add them to the selected photos. This is, as opposed to 20 or 30
additional mouse clicks for the same.

Thinking of this, the same result is probably achievable by just selecting all
the necessary photos and then adding the tag to all. The only problem with this
is that the selection is a fragile thing - it is too easy to reset, and then
the process will have to be started over. So maybe a better overall solution
would be to make the selection more reliable, for instance by adding undo to
selection changes.

Consider the following implementation: when a selection is changed too
drastically (e.g., more than 5 photos are changed from selected to deselected
and back), a label with "undo selection change" button appears at the top of
the window, similarly to how gmail interface operates, and the button
automatically fades out after 10 seconds.
